Steps on How to Remove Kitchen Backsplash

Living in California on a busy work schedule makes it difficult for residents to find time for household chores. If you relate to this fact, you are among the many who want easy-to-follow steps to deal with the aesthetic problems of their house.

So, in pursuit of revamping your house, let’s start with learning how to remove tile backsplash in kitchen by following these easy steps:

Source the Necessary Materials

First things first! You can’t cook a dish until you have all the ingredients in your hand. Similarly, you can’t eliminate an unwanted backsplash until you have the right tools.

So, here are the tools or materials you will need to get started with the removal of kitchen tile backsplashes:

  • A putty knife
  • A hammer
  • A utility knife
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Hand sander or electric sander
  • Sanding pad for drywall
  • Joint compound for drywall

 Prepare the Working Area

In your next step, clear out the kitchen counter, especially where you start the work. It will ensure that you have easy and better access to the backsplash.

After that, remove the outlet covers and cut out the electricity around the area where you will extract the tiles.

Take Out the Tiles

As the stage is set for action, take your putty knife and hammer to carefully chisel off the tiles. Make sure you are edging off the putty knife in a proper manner while beating the hammer on its handle tip. You want to avoid gouging the drywall underneath the tiles.

When the tiles are out, you will observe some adhesive underneath them. These adhesives can either be of a soft or hard texture. If the adhesive is soft, you can easily remove it using 120-grit sandpaper.

But, if you come across a thin-set, hard adhesive texture, you might have to use a hard putty knife and elbow grease to scrape it from the wall.

Fill Out the Drywall Gouges

It is time for you to use the joint compound and fill the drywall gouges. When you are done filling it in all affected areas, sand it out until it is smooth. Now, let the compound dry properly for about 30 minutes.

If you are working on a large drywall space, it is better to use a drywall sanding pad. But if you are working on a smaller area for just a couple of tiles, then 120-grit sandpaper will do the job.

Take Measurements for Replacement Backsplash Tiles

Are you aware of how to measure kitchen backsplash tiles? It is again a simple process, where you have to measure the height & width of every area. Now, multiply the width and height to calculate the total area and divide it by 144.

This way, you will get the square feet area to determine the number of backsplash tiles you need for the replacement purpose.

For instance, if the dimensions are 48” (width) and 18” (height), then the multiplication output is 864. Now, dividing the same by 144, you get 6 square feet as the measurement.

Make sure you do the calculation for every area that needs backsplash replacement.
